• Download the mobi format electronic book to your local computer.
  • Plug in your Kindle using the USB cable that came with it. It will appear on your computer as a mounted file system.
  • Drag and drop (or cp, for the hardcore among you) the mobi file into the documents folder on the Kindle.
  • Eject the Kindle’s drive. (Kindle 1 owners: you’ll also need to unplug the USB cable to get your Kindle back into book-reading mode. Kindle 2 owners can leave the cable connected)
  • Your book will appear in your Kindle’s Home menu.

Known Formatting Issues

  • The Kindle 1 does not support code (fixed-width) fonts. As a result, text in paragraphs that is normally shown in a code font is displayed in the regular font. Code listings are displayed using bitmapped images, so these show correctly.
  • The Kindle 1 does not support tables. We’re tried hard not to use tables as layout elements, but in a few books we found no other way of achieving a decent layout. As a result, some text may be laid out differently on a first generation Kindle.
